Forest Schools

Today was the final session of forest schools for our class. There was a lot of rain and mud so we played some games in the field to warm up. the mud made getting to the upper field quite tricky but the children worked together to help each other get past the mud bank without falling over (too much). The children found the houses they had built for the 'little people' in the other sessions had been sneezed down by a dragon! They quickly set about making dragon traps and mini Christmas decorations for the little houses out of natural materials, with a quick break for a nice hot chocolate!
A big thank you to Joe for making the sessions so fun and exciting.

Nativity

The children were amazing at today's nativity performance! It was a delight to watch them perform.
Whilst on the subject of the nativity, the nativity scene the children created a couple of weeks ago is up in Alwington church and looks stunning.

IPads

Today the children have been using the new iPads in ICT. In literacy we have been looking at instructions and they were able to use their skills to give instructions to program a beebot to move around the screen using the beebot app.

Let's Get Writing

Today the children have been writing up a story that they planned last week. These stories will be sent off to enter into the national Lets Get Writing competition. The children read some of their stories out and it was very interesting to hear the incredible ideas.

Nativity Artwork

On Thursday, the class worked in groups to create a wonderful collage of the nativity scene. This will be going on display in the church.

Science morning

On Friday we had a science day. The class have been learning about animals and how to care for them. We had lots of fun sorting animals into groups, such as birds, fish, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Some children were able to explain if each animal was a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore!
The children also used a website called switcheroo zoo to create a new animal that was suited to cold conditions. We also made bird feeders to help care for the birds during the cold winter when it is hard for them to find food.

A visitor in Year One

On Wednesday the class had an interesting visitor.
Mr Sherwin had made some porridge and while the class were out at play someone came in and ate it all up! Not only that, but we found that they had also broken one of our chairs! Several of the children reported that they had seen a small girl with curly blonde hair sneaking around the school and we immediately thought it must be Goldilocks. So we made some wanted posters giving a description of what she looked like and went out looking for clues while groups went out to make their own porridge.
At the end of these lesson we recieved letter from Goldilocks explaining that she was sorry for what she had done and has asked if there sis anything she can do to make it up to us.

Learning about time

Today in numeracy the children were taught a numeracy lesson by Miss Kiff. They learned about telling the time and did lots of fun activities, including making a clock tower like Big Ben. Can you name the 3D shapes used to make this giant clock tower?

Forest Schools

This term we have started our Forest Schools on Monday mornings. At the weekend our forest school leader, Joe, became a father and was unable to make it into run the outside learning. Great news for him and we wish him well. He will be out next week as well but Forest School will start again the week after with group B getting their first chance to learn about the great outdoors.

Elves and the shoemaker

Last week the class did lots of work based on the Elves and the Shoemaker show we saw. We learned about symmetry by making pairs of shoes using paint and folding the paper, we wrote reviews of the show and we designed new shoes that could be made.
Some children came up with the great idea of writing to the shoemaker and sending our designs so that they could be made!

Artistic poses

Today in art we have been drawing each other in the style of our chosen artist, Keith Haring. In pairs with one partner posing we used 'ghost drawing' to draw the parts of the body in the right sizes and then we used a market pen to give the picture an outline and coloured it in by shading with a crayon. To finish it off we added lines to show movement and action.
